Biosynthesis Training

Course Orientation & Objectives:

The Aim of this 2-year in-depth Training Programme is to understand and appreciate the complexity of the principles of Somatic Psychotherapy and to help the student integrate concepts and methods of Biosynthesis in their Clinical Practice. Counsellors & Psychotherapists are supported to achieve deeper relational levels of competency in their work by engaging in Biosynthesis Structural Exercises and process work. It is expected that participants will have a strong commitment to working with personal process and emerging relational process in the group. The course presents you with a Theoretical and a Clinical Experiential model for the inclusion of the Body in process work, specifically within a Biosynthesis perspective. The aim is to provide you with sufficient theoretical knowledge and experiential skill to facilitate the inclusion of a body awareness context within the therapeutic relationship. Understanding of theory will be supported through Biosynthesis Structural Exercises, Applied Skills Sessions, Experiential Work, Supervision Groups and Theory/Lecture/Discussion Input.

Course Description:

The work Biosynthesis means ‘Integration of Life’. Biosynthesis encourages organic growth, personal development and spiritual integration. The study is a process-oriented path of development, which recognizes the individual as unique and multi-dimensional. The objective of our work is to forge a link between the three aspects of human existence:

  • Somatic or Body Existence.
  • Psychological Experience.
  • Spiritual Essence.

When we work with the body in the context of Biosynthesis, we draw upon the principals of Embryology. We aim to integrate and organize Breathing Patterns. Muscle tone and the Expression of Emotion, so that they flow together as a whole. The methods of Biosynthesis are organized around the principles of Organic Growth. We work with physical movement such as the waveforms of rhythmic breathing to release inhibited intentionality and stimulate new embodiments of the psyche. When we work with the psyche the aim is to integrate feeling, thinking and acting. These are 3 of the most important factors that form and shape an individual. Biosynthesis also relates to the Human Potential hidden within the Trauma, as well of the function of Somatic Resonance and Interpersonal Presence. The Spiritual foundation of Biosynthesis emphasizes the central aspects of Empathy-for our selves as well as for others. It is based on the idea that the qualities of our Essence need to ‘’be grounded’ in our everyday reality.

Professional Clinical Practice:

The supervised practice component will include 250 hours of clinical practice. Some of these 250 hours of clinical practice may be attained during a specified post-course practicum period. Supervision of Clinical Practice:

Applicants will be engaged in an ongoing process of Personal Clinical Supervision to support their general Psychotherapeutic Practice throughout the Biosynthesis Training. In house Group Supervision will be provided during the training in order to help the student integrate their learning of Biosynthesis successfully in their Clinical Practice.

1. Case studies and clinical
seminars

Participants can present cases from their therapeutic practice. The feedback is based on:

  • The principal defense pattern of the client and the question of whether they are able to discover their essential qualities.
  • The transference pattern of the therapist and the question of what they can learn from this to help them develop new strategies.

2. The theory of different styles of bonding

In competition or collusion? We look at the respective bonding pattern between the therapist and the client. They are inhibiting somatic resonance and somatic presence.

3. Different strategies of therapeutic intervention

What is appropriate at what time, and how is it suitable for different character types and the problem in question? We work with the Biosynthesis Life Fields Model. How do I behave with the client? What method do I have as options? Which would I prefer to take depending on my abilities? Since polarity is a central concept in Biosynthesis, what is helpful for one person could damage another. Because of this, the therapist has a whole spectrum of polarities from which to choose an approach, and he or she is guided by the reactions of the client as to which polarity he/she should give priority to at a particular time.

The principal polarities are:

  • Internal work versus external work (experience or expression)
  • Rising or falling energy levels e.g. standing or lying, lightness or gravity, light focus or earth focus.
  • Active leading v’s Receptive Following.
  • Regressive or Progressive Orientation (Immersion into or immersion out of past events).
  • Interaction between Verbal or Non-verbal communication.
